Join us for a discussion (via Zoom) of the classic children's novel All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor, published in 1951. The story tells about a year-in-the-life of a Jewish family (including its five young daughters) living in the Lower East Side of New York City in 1912. All ages are invited to participate, as we use this book as the basis of an intergenerational dialogue about our shared experiences.
The book is available in multiple formats on Amazon, and also in print and audiobook formats at Schlow Library. If you need assistance acquiring a copy, please contact Becca Thorsen at beccapthorsen@gmail.com.
Additional resource: The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue. Its website is rich with photos and stories that illustrate the setting and history in this story. In May, Rachel Serkin, the Museums Manager of School Programs, wrote about the lessons from this story that can be directly applied to our own lives during these strange times. Check out Ms Serkin’s post, An All-of-a-Kind Family Survival Guide to Quarantine.
