Interfaith Iftar and Shavuot Celebration

Along with the Interfaith Initiative Centre County, our congregation and members of the local Islamic community are sponsoring a joint celebration of two important religious events. For Jews, Shavuot is when we celebrate God's gift of the Ten Commandments, presented, according to the Midrash, out in the middle of nowhere (Sinai) because the gift is for all humanity. This year, from mid-May to mid-June (our Sivan), our Muslim neighbors are celebrating Ramadan, the annual month of fasting and introspection. An Iftar is the feast eaten after the sunrise to sunset fast every day of Ramadan. We'll be combining these two religious moments with a program and feast. Join us at the synagogue at 8:00 PM on Saturday May 19th. We'll have food and sharing and some religious teachings. If you would like to bring a dairy or vegetarian dish, please let Rabbi Ostrich know.
